My vacation is coming to a close, and it’s been a fulfilling one, complete with a visit to one of my old Norcal haunts: Barefoot Coffee. One of my old music-major friends, “Hannah,” gave me a gift card there that she snagged from groupon, so we met there while I was back in town.
Barefoot is my favorite Bay Area coffee shop, for a number of reasons. First and foremost, their coffee drinks are really good. So good, in fact, that I can pretty confidently say that if you take a Starbucks latte (or whatever your usual drink is) and drink it side-by-side with a Barefoot latte (or whatever), your subsequent visits to Starbucks will be unfulfilling. This is not a snobbish thing – it’s more like the difference between a cheeseburger from In-N-Out and one from Jack in the Box. They’re conceptually the same, and roughly the same price, but the experience is completely different. Also, Barefoot Coffee is cool because they make little designs in the top of your drink. Usually they give me a heart. This time, they made a double heart – one big one and one small one below. One time I went there on a slow day and they drew me a swan. And the kicker: Barefoot has a drink called “Café brûlée,” which is like crème brûlée except with espresso and milk instead of custard. As in, they make the drink, put sugar on top, and take a propane torch to it. This sounds like a great idea because it is a great idea.
